Jiaogulan and Diabetes

Diabetes is one of the fastest growing diseases in the world. According to the American Diabetes Association there are 18.2 million people in the United States, or 6.3% of the population, who have diabetes. While an estimated 13 million have been diagnosed with diabetes, unfortunately, 5.2 million people (or nearly one-third) are unaware that they have the disease. Recent research suggests Jiaogulan may be a helpful dietary supplement for people with diabetes.

The science behind Jiaogulan

More research is needed. Jiaogulan is an herbal dietary and not a medicine, treatment or cure. However it may be a helpful supplement for people with diabetes.

Improved Glucose Tolerance and Insulin Levels

Åke Norberg, et al. A Novel Insulin-releasing Substance, Phanoside, from the Plant Gynostemma pentaphyllum. Journal of Biological Chemistry. 2004.

- Researchers from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden and from Hanoi Medical University, Hanoi, Vietnam teamed up to research the effects of Jiaogulan on insulin production.  they isolated a new gypenoside (the generic name for the active ingredients in Jiaogulan) that appears related to insulin production.  I laboratory studies they found that when pancreartic cells from rats were stimulated with this gypenoside they produced insulin. the researchers followed up by giving the isolated gypenoside orally to hyperglecemic rats. The rats had improved glucose tolerance and the insulin levels in their blood increased.

Lower glucose, insulin and triglycerides.

Cheng, H.W.  et al. The effect of gypenosides  to lower the hyperglycemia in rats with diabetes melllitus. Chinese Journal of Diabetes Melllitus. 1997

Dr. Cheng and his team gave Jiaogulan extracts to rats with diabetes. After four weeks they measured "markedly lower" blood glucose, insulin and triglycride levels.

 89%  effective

Cheng, H.W.  et al. Clinical study on the effect of gypenosides on hyperlipaemia in 46 patients with diabetes mellitus.  Journal of Applied Combined Chinese and Western Medicine. 1997

In a follow-up to the above study, Dr. Cheng gave jiaogulan extracts to 46 patients with diabetes. After just 8 weeks 89.1% of patients showed improved glucose, insulin and triglyceride levels.

Our Jiaogulan tea is grown under strict organic quality control standards in the highlands of Thailand. We dry the tea in loose leaf form at the farm and we ship fresh to the US each month to maintain maximum potency. Unlike many herbals, Jiaogulan tastes great hot or cold. We were awarded the prize for best tasting tea in Thailand by the Thai Agriculture Ministry.
